Rights Respecting Schools

Schools are committed to becoming a rights respecting school, within a rights respecting city.

Three schools within the Vantage Academy Trust – St. Barnabas, St. James, and Gorton Primary – all situated in Manchester City Council, are currently pursuing accreditation for the ‘Rights Respecting Schools Award‘. Manchester has embraced a ‘Rights Respecting’ ethos, with the borough council providing financial support for all local schools to pursue this accreditation.

Central to this initiative is empowering students with knowledge of their rights, as outlined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Understanding these rights not only sets standards for children but also empowers them to advocate for themselves when these standards are not met. It’s crucial for our schools to instill in students an awareness of their rights, while fostering a culture of respect, dignity, and compassion within our communities.

The ethos of this accreditation aligns perfectly with our Vantage strategy for Great Schools, Great People, and Great Communities. The initial involvement of three of our schools could pave the way for extending this initiative across our entire trust.

Congratulations to all three schools St. Barnabas, St. James and Gorton Primary, for achieving their bronze RRSA award. This demonstrates their commitment to fostering a culture of respect within a rights-respecting city. The process included training, dissemination to stakeholders, and forming a pupil steering group to create an action plan. Over the next 12-18 months, this plan will be implemented to achieve the silver level of accreditation.

We eagerly anticipate updates on how this initiative is integrated into school life and our wider school communities.

Charmain May, School Improvement Partner, I am thrilled that the hard work of both Erin and Laura has paid off and that Gorton Primary School is recognised as a Rights Respecting School.  I look forward to working with them on their journey to become a Silver Rights Respecting School.  Congratulations!

Jill Albertina, CEO of Vantage Academy Trust, congratulated Gorton Primary community on their achieving recognition of their bronze award.
