Vantage Safeguards FGS Future

In recent years member school, Flixton Girls School (FGS), has been significantly over-subscribed. The quality of the education, their Good OFSTED outcome and the broader experiences provided by the school have made it popular with parents and students. The Trust and school appreciate this support and want more girls to be able to benefit from FGS founding principles of aspiration, empowerment, and excellence.

Following careful analysis of population data for Trafford and pupil admission data for FGS the Trust has made the decision to increase the number of Year 7 places available at FGS from September 2024.

This means we can increase places from 180 to 210, for current year 6 students, within the local community. The introduction of a bulge year will apply to year 7 only; until plans for wider expansion of FGS are finalised.

In the forthcoming months there will be a period of consultation for permanently increasing the pupil admission number within FGS to 210 in every year group from September 2025.

This expansion is a positive development, which further strengthens the position of FGS within the community and safeguards the future success for the entire school.

Unfortunately, because of the above plan our Trustee and Executive Leadership team have made the difficult decision to end the current contract with Trafford College and commence a phased closure of Flixton Sixth Form provision. This means not offering year 12 places to any prospective students from September 2024.

This phased closure will not impact on any students currently studying at FGS Sixth Form. All students will complete their courses as planned, after which the Sixth Form will close in July 2025. when the current students in year 12 complete their courses at the end of year 13. We do not anticipate any job losses for staff because of this decision.

Students that are currently in the Sixth Form will continue to be supported, nurtured, challenged, and inspired to do their absolute best and, as they are currently receiving focused tuition with small class sizes, we are confident that they will achieve success in their studies.

Most of the current year 11 students have chosen to study in alternative settings across Trafford and are therefore unaffected by this decision. FGS staff are working closely with the students and their families on a 1:1 basis to help them secure the post 16 destination of their choice.

FGS has always had a strong history of providing excellent education and meeting the needs of their community well. The school is oversubscribed and is a vibrant and happy place to learn, retaining the ‘Good’ Ofsted rating in 2023. The trust is proud of their achievements but recognises there is more we can do – and to deliver our ambitions requires us to think differently and use our resources carefully.

It is therefore with regret that Leaders, Governors, and Trustees of Vantage Academies Trust believe that closure of the FGS Sixth Form provision from September 2025 is the only way to safeguard the future success of the whole school.
